A Comprehensive Packing List for Digital Nomads: Essential Carry-On Bags, Tech Gadgets, and Filmmaking Equipment

My Digital Nomad Packing List: Carry-on Bags, Tech & Filmmaking Gear

As a digital nomad, your lifestyle revolves around the freedom to work remotely from anywhere in the world. Whether you’re a freelance writer, designer, developer, or even a filmmaker, having the right equipment is crucial for a successful nomadic journey. In this article, we will explore the essential items that should be on every digital nomad’s packing list, particularly those who are passionate about filmmaking.

Carry-on bags are an essential component of a digital nomad’s life. Opting for a carry-on bag, rather than a large suitcase or backpack, allows for easier mobility and eliminates the risk of lost luggage. The Tortuga Outbreaker Backpack and the Nomatic Travel Pack are two popular options amongst digital nomads due to their ample storage capacity, durability, and ergonomic design. These bags are compartmentalized, allowing for easy organization of tech gadgets, clothing, and personal items.

Speaking of tech gadgets, they are the lifeline for any digital nomad. The most fundamental item is, of course, a reliable laptop. Depending on your needs, MacBook Air or Pro, or a Windows laptop like the Dell XPS, are highly recommended choices. A laptop stand, such as the Roost Laptop Stand, is also worth considering as it promotes better posture and prevents neck strain.

A quality smartphone and noise-canceling headphones are also must-haves. The latest iPhone or Samsung Galaxy phones offer excellent features for both work and leisure, while headphones like the Bose QuietComfort or Sony WH-1000XM4 provide immersive sound without distractions. An external hard drive, cloud storage, and a portable charger are essential for backing up important data and staying connected while on the move.

Now, let’s dive into the filmmaking gear. If you’re passionate about creating videos, having a compact yet powerful camera is essential. The Sony A7S III, Canon EOS R5, or Panasonic Lumix GH5 are highly recommended mirrorless cameras that offer great versatility, professional-grade video capabilities, and excellent image quality. Along with the camera body, investing in a variety of lenses and a sturdy tripod will enhance your filmmaking journey.

Moreover, a portable audio recorder and a quality microphone, like the Rode VideoMic Pro, are essential for capturing excellent sound quality. Lighting plays a crucial role in any visual content creation, so consider investing in a portable LED light kit, such as the Aputure AL-M9 or Lume Cube, to enhance the visual aesthetics of your shots.

To ensure smooth editing and post-production, investing in a high-quality laptop with sufficient RAM, storage, and a powerful graphics card is crucial. Software like Adobe Creative Cloud is the go-to for professional video editing, graphics design, and motion graphics. Having an external hard drive with ample storage capacity is also essential for storing and transporting large video files.

Remember, as a film enthusiast, organization and protection of your gear are vital. Consider carrying a camera bag or insert, like the Peak Design Everyday Backpack or Tenba BYOB 9, to securely hold your camera equipment. Additionally, a waterproof backpack cover and a portable hard drive case will help safeguard your gadgets from unexpected elements and accidents.

Being a digital nomad allows you to chase your passion for filmmaking while exploring new horizons. By having the right packing list, you can work efficiently and create stunning videos on the go. Ensure you have the necessary equipment and prioritized essentials, and soon enough, you’ll be capturing breathtaking moments in every corner of the world.

I still use nexstand laptop stand and external keyboard but must admit to have – as minimalist – problem with carrying these extra items with me; besides if you have laptop with excellent keyboard (I use Lenovo Thinkbook) using external one seems problematic; what you think about laptop stands such as MOFT laptop stand ?

Hey bro. Excellent video I loved the gear and am buying most of your packing list to upgrade a lot of my stuff as I am new to being a digital nomad. Quick question: is the session tee still made? All I see on western rise are the Strong Core Merino and X Cotton Tee. Are they renamed? I LOVED the shirt the most. PS what height/ weight are you and what size do you order?

Thank you for posting this, I was really impressed! I watched it a couple of days ago and couldn't stop thinking about it. Can you elaborate (maybe in another video?) and explain how you can live with only 4 shirts/socks/underwear? Do you wash them everyday? How about when you are in a cold country and clothes take longer to dry? How about in hot countries and you exercise or sweat a lot during the day? Really curious to know…

    Gracias y abrazos desde Brasil!

The problem is that nowadays, most airlines are very strict on the weight limits of carry on luggages. You have so many heavy gears!

Great video, Sergio! I'm going to make a list with Pack Hacker. Will help me to visualise. Have struggled with my carry on as currently been travelling between 2 seasons. Will check out some of the clothing companies you mentioned.
