Digital Nomad Visa in SPAIN: Everything You Need To Know

With the rise of remote working and the increasing popularity of the digital nomad lifestyle, many countries around the world are adapting their immigration policies to accommodate these modern professionals. Spain, known for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture, has recently introduced a Digital Nomad Visa to attract remote workers from across the globe. If you are considering becoming a digital nomad in Spain, here is everything you need to know about the Digital Nomad Visa.

Who is eligible?
The Digital Nomad Visa is open to individuals who can demonstrate that they work remotely and do not rely on local employment in Spain. Whether you are an employee of a foreign company or a freelancer, as long as you can work remotely, you may be eligible for this visa.

What are the requirements?
To apply for the Digital Nomad Visa, you will need to meet certain requirements. These include having a valid passport, having private health insurance coverage, and providing proof of sufficient financial means to support yourself during your stay in Spain. Additionally, you must show a work contract, a client list, or proof of freelance work, proving that you are indeed a digital nomad.

How long can you stay?
The Digital Nomad Visa allows you to stay in Spain for up to one year. However, it’s worth noting that this is a non-renewable visa, meaning that once it expires, you will have to leave Spain and cannot apply for another Digital Nomad Visa. If you wish to continue living and working in Spain, you will need to explore other visa options.

What are the benefits?

You will also have access to Spain’s public healthcare system, which provides comprehensive medical coverage. Additionally, this visa enables you to open a bank account in Spain and enjoy all the benefits that come with it.

How to apply?
To apply for the Digital Nomad Visa in Spain, you need to visit the Spanish consulate or embassy in your home country. The application process typically involves completing a form, paying a fee, and providing all the necessary documents. It’s essential to check with the consulate or embassy for the specific requirements and procedures as they may vary slightly depending on your location.

Additional considerations
While living the digital nomad life in Spain may sound appealing, there are a few things to consider before applying. Ensure that you have a good understanding of the cost of living in Spain, as it can vary across different regions. It’s also beneficial to research the local regulations regarding income tax and ensure you are compliant with any obligations. Lastly, familiarize yourself with the local culture and language, as it will enhance your overall experience and help with day-to-day interactions.

Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa presents an exciting opportunity for remote workers seeking to experience the country’s vibrant culture while continuing their professional journey. By meeting the requirements and going through the application process, digital nomads can enjoy legal living and working conditions while immersing themselves in the beauty and charm of Spain.

    1. How many times can you renew your digital nomad visa in Spain?

    2. Can you get permanent residency if you stay in Spain for 5 years on a digital nomad visa? Or would those 5 years not count due to the nature of the visa?

As of yesterday US w2 employees are no longer eligible. The government is requiring a certificate of social security which is ONLY for companies transferring employees to a branch in Spain or an EOR which would then make the employer a Spanish entity. The DNV would then no longer be a valid visa option and the employee would need a Spanish work visa instead. The only way to apply would be to 1099 self employed worker who pays into the Spanish SS system.
