Applying for Uruguay’s digital nomad permit: Step-by-step guide

Uruguay has recently implemented a digital nomad visa program, allowing remote workers to live and work in the country for up to one year. This unique opportunity is perfect for those who are able to work remotely and wish to experience the beauty and culture of Uruguay while continuing their professional pursuits.

To apply for Uruguay’s digital nomad permit, there are a few steps you will need to follow:

1. Determine your eligibility: To qualify for the digital nomad permit, you must be able to demonstrate that you have a stable income from a remote job or freelance work. You will need to show proof of employment, such as a letter from your employer or recent pay stubs. It is also important to have health insurance coverage for the duration of your stay in Uruguay.

2. Gather the necessary documents: In addition to proof of income and health insurance, you will need to provide a valid passport, a clean criminal record certificate, and a recent passport-sized photo. You may also be required to provide a letter of intent explaining why you want to live and work in Uruguay as a digital nomad.

3. Complete the application form: You can download the application form from the official website of Uruguay’s Department of Immigration. Fill out the form completely and accurately, making sure to provide all necessary information and documentation.

4. Submit your application: Once you have completed the application form and gathered all required documents, you can submit your application to the Department of Immigration either in person or by mail. It is recommended to submit your application at least a few weeks before your planned arrival in Uruguay to allow for processing time.

5. Wait for approval: After submitting your application, you will need to wait for the Department of Immigration to review your documents and make a decision on your digital nomad permit. The processing time can vary, but you should receive a response within a few weeks.

6. Arrive in Uruguay: If your digital nomad permit is approved, you can make arrangements to travel to Uruguay and begin your one-year stay in the country. Upon arrival, you may be required to complete additional paperwork and register with the Department of Immigration.

Overall, applying for Uruguay’s digital nomad permit is a relatively straightforward process for those who meet the eligibility requirements and have the necessary documentation. By following these steps and preparing carefully, you can enjoy a year of living and working in Uruguay as a digital nomad. So, pack your bags and get ready to experience all that Uruguay has to offer!

So how the heck does that work for timing? I've read it takes up to 20 business days to be accepted but you only have 1 day before paying? Can you be accepted without paying it? I'm confused on the last part which seems like you must do the whole application while you're already in Uruguay?

I would just like to write about my experience with the digital nomad visa because hopefully it will help someone else down the line. Yes, the application and payment process is easy. What comes after is not. I don't know who told whom you'll get it in 10 days because you absolutely do not. I received mine 14 days — yes, FOURTEEN DAYS — before the expiration of my nomad visa. No matter how many times you phone, you will get nowhere. They either won't answer or your queries will be dismissed. Anyway, this means that I don't have enough time to renew the visa because I can't get an appointment to get the cebula (identity card). You need a cebula, you ask? Yes, apparently. I didn't know about this either because the only thing anyone ever mentions in these videos and blog posts is the permit that will be e-mailed to you. No one ever talks about this cebula you'll need. The e-mail in question doesn't mention the cebula either. Your permit will, though, which will come as quite a surprise to you. But you need it to renew the nomad visa and you need an appointment to get it… Good luck getting that appointment. You definitely won't 14 days before your nomad visa expires. So, now I'm all out of luck. I'll have to leave the country, digital nomad permit in hand, and hope that they understand what it's for and that I didn't "overstay" on my visitor's visa. So, my recommendation is: if you want to do this and you haven't received it in 10 days, then you absolutely need to start contacting people who aren't part of the government. Try Live In Uruguay, hopefully they can help you. If you want to renew it, make sure you get everything well in order before your 180 days are up. Your stuff needs to be translated by public translators. Good luck getting a response out of them, only one bothered to respond to my queries. Depending on where you're from in the world, this translation won't be cheap either. The only nice thing is that you can get vaccinated for free. I hope this helps someone else down the line and saves them from the horrendous stress I've experienced because of this digital nomad visa. If it worked the way it's advertised, it would be great. But you absolutely need to be aware that, at this point in time, it doesn't.
