Being a Digital Nomad in Toledo, Ohio, US

Toledo, Ohio may not be the first city that comes to mind when thinking about where to live as a digital nomad, but this up-and-coming Midwestern city has a lot to offer for remote workers looking for an affordable and vibrant place to call home.

One of the main draws of living in Toledo as a digital nomad is its low cost of living. Housing prices are significantly lower than in major metropolitan areas like New York City or San Francisco, making it easier to find a comfortable and affordable place to live while freelancing or working remotely. Additionally, the cost of groceries, dining out, and other daily expenses are more budget-friendly in Toledo, allowing digital nomads to stretch their dollars further.

In addition to being affordable, Toledo offers a high quality of life for remote workers. The city is home to a variety of cultural attractions, including the Toledo Museum of Art, the Toledo Zoo, and the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. There are also several parks and outdoor spaces where digital nomads can relax and unwind after a long day of work. Toledo’s dining scene is also diverse and affordable, with a range of restaurants offering everything from local Midwestern cuisine to international dishes.

For digital nomads looking to connect with other remote workers, Toledo has a growing community of freelancers, entrepreneurs, and creatives. There are coworking spaces and networking events where individuals can meet and collaborate with like-minded professionals. The city also hosts a number of meetups and workshops for those looking to expand their skills and learn from others in the digital nomad community.

Of course, no city is perfect, and Toledo does have its drawbacks for digital nomads. The weather can be harsh during the winter months, with cold temperatures and snow that may not appeal to those who prefer warmer climates. The city’s public transportation options are also limited, making it necessary for remote workers to have access to a car or rely on rideshare services to get around.

Overall, living in Toledo, Ohio as a digital nomad can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience. With its low cost of living, vibrant cultural scene, and growing community of remote workers, Toledo offers a welcoming and supportive environment for those looking to live and work remotely. Whether you’re seeking affordable housing, a diverse dining scene, or a tight-knit digital nomad community, Toledo has something to offer for every remote worker looking to make the city their home.

Thanks, Sergio. Great videography btw, and I so love it that you included your Mom I this piece as well. I’m originally from Chicago, and honestly never thought about moving back to the Midwest until now. I left Chicago and have lived in LA , and the cost of living here has become horrendous.

This video by far, is the best lense in which to view the modern-day City of Toledo. I grew up in a small town in northwest Ohio only to move to Toledo about 28 years ago to continue my career. I must admit, I was not fond of Toledo initially, but as time has passed and private dollars have been invested in Toledo, I really enjoy this city. Your filming occurred just prior to the Solheim Cup – a magical time for Toledo. Toledo ended up having some of the best weather and shined like the jewel it truly is despite its hardships and politics. The hardest part in watching this video was your ending: Mr. Collin Thomas Folk. You were gracious to pay tribute to him. I did not know this fellow but in this video you could tell what a charming fellow he was. Perhaps you can do another video of Toledo on your next visit to see your family. Much has changed, but all for the better. Thanks Mr. Sala, for sharing.

It seems like you have to be from old money or a digital nomad to be able to live in a part of Toledo that isn't a hell hole. Such diffrent perspectives depending on which neighborhood you can afford to live in. I would have loved to move there to buy the home in Southside that had been in my family for 4 generations up until my grandparents died, but there was no work to be found for me. Maybe I should've gone into IT or something.

Nice video. I was YouTubing Toledo videos in advance of my visit this April. My mom’s family was from Toledo and I would always visit my grandparents there. My grandfather worked at the Rossford glass plant his whole life, ending up as the plant manager for 20 years. I think it’s been 15 years since I’ve been there. I’ll definitely go to Tony Packos—love that place!

Great Video! I did not read all the comments but as far as the Maumee River is concerned it got it's name during the French occupation and the river was originally called the Miami River but the French pronunciation sounds like Maumee. You can find this fact and many other if you Visit Fort Meigs in Perrysburg located right across the river from the city of Maumee.

The word ‘Maumee’ in Maumee River is actually an anglicized spelling of the Ottawa name for the Miami Indians, ‘maamii.’

I'm nostalgic in seeing your video! I grew up in Toledo, went to University there, and just moved to Tampa, Florida. I miss the low commute times and local, small-town feel! Thanks for this incredible video and for curing my feelings of home sickness!
