First and foremost , be excellent in what you do. A reliable , honest and competent worker is rare nowadays . I worked for 4 years in 2 large companies. I honed my skills and had contacts in the industry. I decided to go free lance to control my time. I hated having others decide if I could spend time with family on New Year’s Day or Christmas. I hated dealing with admin people who cannot even understand my knowledge based highly technical job impose protocols to make themselves look useful. I realised I could earn so much more if I went free lance but the income could swing wildly . Thank you Jesus . The work just streamed in when I went free lance. I can work an average of 25 hours per week And earn 120-140 k per year for the past 20 years. I have minimal overheads : insurance and gas money. Time for hobbies and exercise.
Haha lol she started biking to work to save gas money and started gardening. This sounds like every educated european's dream, here we do not worship cars, but sustainability. Yes, i know she was trying to make a point and distances are considerable in the us, also "the small treats" of the wealthy are a burden for the poor (always being on the run, always planning and saving money, always improvising and losing rest time in trying to make ends meet), but some of these "slow" customs may be beneficiary. Im saying this as a really poorly paid ngo worker who rode her bike to work "to save money" and always cooked her food, now im too lazy to walk anywhere so i always ride my bike and i panic when i have to plan for a trip on public transportation because it is more unpredictable than my own two legs.
None of this is capitalism's fault. It is the mindset of the freelancer/artist. People won't value your work if you don't first.

It is because of capitalism that you can be successful on Youtube…you can be VERY successful, or not so much. It all depends upon you, your creativity and the value you choose to bring. I find that fact alone to be in great contrast to your opening comment.

She says she hates capitalism, where else do you have the freedom to freelance like this? In what other system can you make a decent living doing something purely for entertainment? The government isn’t going to hire you to be “unproductive” and make art. Capitalism is not perfect but I don’t see how you hate it when it’s the reason the art industry is bigger than ever.
