Digital Nomad – expectations vs reality (returning to Poland)

Becoming a digital nomad has become a popular lifestyle choice in recent years. The freedom to work from anywhere in the world and the ability to explore new countries and cultures while maintaining a steady income is a dream for many. However, the reality of being a digital nomad can often be very different from the expectations.

I recently returned to Poland after spending several years as a digital nomad, and I can attest to the fact that there are many challenges that come with this lifestyle. Here are some of the expectations versus reality that I experienced during my time as a digital nomad.

Expectation: Constant travel and adventure
Reality: While being able to travel and work from anywhere is definitely a perk of being a digital nomad, the reality is that it can be exhausting. Constantly moving from place to place can be draining, both physically and mentally. Additionally, the need to constantly find reliable Wi-Fi and a comfortable workspace can be a challenge in many countries.

Expectation: Flexibility and freedom
Reality: While digital nomads have the flexibility to set their own schedule and work from anywhere, this can also lead to a lack of structure and routine. Without a fixed office and set working hours, it can be difficult to separate work from leisure time and stay disciplined in getting work done.

Expectation: Making new friends and connections
Reality: While traveling can open up opportunities to meet new people and make connections around the world, the transient nature of being a digital nomad can make it difficult to form deep, lasting relationships. Constantly saying goodbye to friends and moving on to the next destination can be lonely and isolating at times.

Expectation: Financial freedom
Reality: While some digital nomads may be able to earn a comfortable income while traveling, the reality is that many struggle to make ends meet. The cost of living in some countries can be much higher than expected, and unexpected expenses can quickly add up. Additionally, the lack of job security and benefits such as health insurance can be a source of stress for many digital nomads.

In conclusion, while the idea of being a digital nomad can be exciting and glamorous, the reality is often much different. It’s important to consider the challenges and potential drawbacks of this lifestyle before making the leap. Digital nomadism is not for everyone, and it’s essential to be prepared for the ups and downs that come with it.
