My first job as a researcher, author/journalist for a TV program in the 1990ies in Germany was remote already 😉 Most of it could be done at home, a café or even for a few days elsewhere. But as some meetings in presence were fixed, I couldn't travel too far. But I loved this lifestyle pretty much and practiced it the whole decade long, but then I preferred a steady job with fix income and found it for again 10 years. Then my lifestyle changed again completely, creating an autonomous Social-Media-Content-Creator-Lifestyle. Now, since more than five years, I'm settled down in Brazil and own a small Guesthouse and receive guests from all over the world. Well done. I'm happy.

I did the digital nomad life for about 4 years. I loved it. But I don't think I could go back to it. I got really burned out on the cycle of 1) making a friend 2) hanging out with them for a few weeks/months 3) one of us leaves to another destination 4) I feel lonely again 5) find a new friend 6) rinse a repeat. Long story short, got burned out on temporary friends.

I have lived for more than 10 months in 7 different countries. After all that, you do need a country where you have your base or HQ…..in this case my base is in the US.
Cool thing about moving is the novelty seeking, when you are in a new place you feel like you're in a vacation or some type of twilight zone. My favorite part was moving in, then the thrill plateaus and then you seek another "thrill."
Just avoid get rich quick scams and FOMO's….you still have to put in y a good 6 or 8 hours of work, somedays 12 but it's ok.

The best way to do it is to become an IT contractor in the US in an in demand technology like Alteryx, Python, Cloud or ERP under your own LLC and work a couple of contracts at a time. Many IT contractors can make $400k-$500k doing that. This way you can actually do the work overseas without creating tax liabilities for your employer as a W-2 employee. I like to travel abroad for just a month at a time every quarter, but mainly work from home in NYC. I prefer the NYC lifestyle and diversity to most places in the world anyway, but every few months it is nice to base myself in a hub city and explore the surrounding countries. However, I don't want to do that exclusively because it gets lonely and I also don't want to give up my US income. The main reason to do it this way is to take advantage of the geoarbitrage of earning a US based income (highest paying in the world), and enjoy the greater buying power it gives you in most of the world.

While I am not comfortable, I am excited like I have never been excited in my life. Here's to digital nomad prosperity for the 2022!
