Facing the Unsettling Realities of Starting Out as a Virtual Assistant 😬

When starting out as a virtual assistant, there are many uncomfortable truths that you may encounter. While being a virtual assistant can be a rewarding and flexible career, there are some less glamorous aspects that you need to be aware of. Here are some uncomfortable truths to keep in mind as you start your journey as a virtual assistant.

1. It’s not all glamorous work – While being a virtual assistant can offer you the opportunity to work from home and have a flexible schedule, the work itself is not always glamorous. You may find yourself doing mundane tasks like data entry, scheduling, and answering emails. It’s important to remember that every job has its less exciting aspects, and as a virtual assistant, you may have to do some of the more tedious tasks to support your clients.

2. You may have to set boundaries with your clients – Working as a virtual assistant means that you may have to set boundaries with your clients to protect your time and sanity. Some clients may expect you to be available at all hours of the day, or ask for quick turnarounds on tasks. It’s important to set clear expectations at the beginning of your working relationship and communicate your availability and work hours.

3. You’ll need to be self-disciplined – Working from home as a virtual assistant requires a high level of self-discipline. It can be tempting to procrastinate or get distracted when you’re in your own space. You’ll need to find ways to stay focused and motivated, and have the self-discipline to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality work to your clients.

4. You may have to constantly market yourself – As a virtual assistant, you are essentially running your own business, and that means marketing yourself to potential clients. This can be a challenging and uncomfortable aspect of the job, especially if you’re not used to promoting yourself. You’ll need to be proactive in finding and pitching to clients, and constantly market your skills and services to stand out in a competitive market.

5. You may face fluctuating income – As a virtual assistant, your income may not always be consistent. You may experience periods of high demand and steady income, followed by slower periods with fewer clients and less work. It’s important to be prepared for this and have a financial safety net in place to tide you over during slower times.

Starting out as a virtual assistant can be a rewarding and fulfilling career choice, but it’s important to be aware of these uncomfortable truths before diving in. By being prepared for these challenges, you can set yourself up for success as a virtual assistant and navigate the ups and downs of the job with confidence.

I was just looking but this is actually solid advice that I have used as a self employed contract worker. Honestly people really forget you have to start at the bottom in order to get to the top! Just like climbing a tree! Thank you Erin Booth!!

these uncomfortable truths were very comfortable to me and they make sense. it’s been a week since i’ve dedicated myself into becoming a va and i wanted to start my rates from $18-19/hr since i’m now getting into the field. but when i went on social media just to get more info on how to become a va, a lot of the experienced va’s recommended that when starting out, your rates should be high which didn’t make sense to me especially for people like myself just starting out. i’m glad i came across your video erin i’ve bought several of your courses on udemy and you’ve been extremely helpful with my new path im taking for myself! thank you thank you!!
