I Got the New Portuguese Digital Nomad D8 Residency Visa
In a world where remote work is on the rise, digital nomads have become the epitome of freedom and flexibility. These adventurous individuals explore new destinations while working remotely. However, one of the biggest challenges for digital nomads has always been obtaining legal residency in a foreign country. That is, until now. Portugal has recently introduced the new Portuguese Digital Nomad D8 Residency Visa, allowing digital nomads to live and work legally in the country.
The Portuguese Digital Nomad D8 Residency Visa is specifically designed for self-employed remote workers who do not need to be physically present at a specific location. This visa is available to citizens of any non-European Union (EU) country and is valid for one year, with the option to renew annually for two additional years.
To be eligible for the Portuguese Digital Nomad D8 Residency Visa, individuals must meet certain criteria. Applicants must demonstrate that they are self-employed or provide services to clients who are not based in Portugal. They are required to have tax residency in Portugal and must not have any criminal records. Additionally, applicants must present proof of health insurance coverage valid in Portugal and provide evidence of sufficient means to support themselves during their stay in the country.
Obtaining the Portuguese Digital Nomad D8 Residency Visa is a straightforward process. Applicants can submit their documents and application through the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) website. Once the application is approved, individuals can travel to Portugal and obtain their visa at the nearest SEF office.
One of the major advantages of the Portuguese Digital Nomad D8 Residency Visa is the attractive tax benefits it offers. Under this visa, digital nomads are only taxed on income generated in Portugal, with any income earned outside the country being tax-free. This tax regime, known as the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) regime, also offers a flat tax rate of 20% for specific professions, making Portugal an even more enticing destination for digital nomads.
Portugal’s low cost of living, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture also make it an appealing choice for digital nomads. From stunning coastal towns to cosmopolitan cities like Lisbon and Porto, Portugal has something to offer every digital nomad. Reliable internet infrastructure, a strong expat community, and an excellent quality of life further enhance the appeal of this beautiful European country.
The launch of the Portuguese Digital Nomad D8 Residency Visa marks an important milestone in accommodating the needs of the digital nomad community. By recognizing the value of remote workers and providing a supportive framework, Portugal is leading the way in attracting and nurturing this globally mobile workforce.
If you are a digital nomad looking for a legal and welcoming environment to settle in, the Portuguese Digital Nomad D8 Residency Visa might be the solution you’ve been searching for. With its ease of obtaining, attractive tax benefits, and incredible lifestyle, Portugal could be your next digital nomad paradise. So pack your bags, grab your laptop, and let Portugal be your new home as you chase your dreams and work from anywhere in the world.

Do you recommend any agencies or lawyers?
thanks for this awesome video! which agency did you go through to get your NIF?
This is the most helpful video about the overall process I’ve found. So grateful for you sharing this with us !
Hey there Adrien 🙂
Did you have to include your Tax Certificate in your application?
Thanks so much for sharing your experince of applying for D8 visa. I'm preparing for D8 too, and I wonder if it is possible to submit a promissory lease contract instead of formal lease contract? To avoid the rental expenses during the visa application reviewing time.
Hi Adrien, thanks for the information in this video it helped a-lot!
I've got a one question though, is it required to show a 1 year lease for a rental to get the digital nomad visa? Because it doesn't really makes sense if your application gets denied you're stuck with a 1 year rental that you can't actually live in…?
Thanks 🙂
Do you need NIF for D8 visa application?
Thanks so much for this video! So how long from the embassy appt until your office manager received your passport back?
Update: ignore, I heard you say 2 months
Thanks so much for making this video. We have our D8 visa appointments next week and I've been a bit nervous because our situation is the same as yours, we own a business and aren't paid a set salary and just take money out of the business as needed so it's a bit of a different situation than most people. The fact that you got approval is very encouraging! Enjoy Portugal!
super informative and helpful, thanks!
How do ppl do a dummy lease? Thanks
Im in process of d7 by myself, then thought easier for spaiin process. Now IDK!!! D8?!
I'm on a EU Blue Card in Finland, but I'm restricted from working for myself with this card. I've also got a family following me, I'm wondering whether you're eligible for family reunification with this D8 visa?
Congratulations! Adrien, me and my husband want to apply to d8 too. How much does 3040 gross euros to net? I find some calculators but all them are different. Please guide us, we want to learn if we have sufficent income
Great Video Adrien, I'm quite like you as far as neuroticism is concerned. One thing I would love to know is that will you be able to renew your residency again after 2 years without much hassle?
Congrats!
but what would happen after the SEF meeting and getting the 2 years residency? would you be able to extend it and get a citizenship later?
Thanks for sharing your experience! It’s harder than I thought to find content of people who’ve gotten the D8 visa so I appreciate you sharing it. I hope you’ll provide another update after you go through your SEF interview!
Thanks for such an informative video, Adrien. I'm looking to move to Portugal.I was wondering if it was possible to come on a digital nomad visa and then get citizenship after renewing it and living in Portugal for 5 years? Also, would an airbnb booking be okay to show as residence when I arrive or do I have to have a lease agreement?
Great video. Thanks for the update
Hey Adrien,
Awesome video.
Before getting a visa, I can show my minimum income of 3040 euros for 6 months. but after getting the visa, it may stay below 3040 euro for some months, for example, I may not be able to work fully during holidays and the months I am sick. Is there any problem after getting this visa when i want to extend the visa, can the SEF check my income after getting the visa and prevent me from renewing the visa because i have earned less for some months?
Welcome to Portugal, Adrien!!! I'm Portuguese sooo…. I'm going to test you ; ) here it goes: "Olá, como estás?"

Congratulations!! enjoy your journey in Portugal much love.
I am so happy for you!!
It's really too long and tense. I deeply feel that it's like a movie. But the result is good. I hope you can realize your wish.
Congratulations! Home to Lisbon Must have a celebration with your friends

I’m feeling your anxiety and pain myself as I watch and listen to your story. And your relief. Congrats
