Living as a Digital Nomad in Istanbul, Turkey: Navigating High Inflation in 2022

My Life in Istanbul, Turkey as a Digital Nomad: Cost of Living with High Inflation in 2022

Istanbul, the bustling metropolis that straddles two continents, is a city of contrasts. With its ancient historic sites and modern skyline, it is a popular destination for digital nomads looking to experience a blend of rich culture and vibrant energy. As a digital nomad living in Istanbul, I have encountered the unique challenge of managing my expenses in a city with high inflation in 2022.

One of the first things I noticed upon arriving in Istanbul was the cost of living. While the city offers a wide range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly hostels to luxury apartments, the prices have seen a steady increase due to the country’s high inflation rate. Rent prices in popular expat neighborhoods such as Beyoglu and Kadikoy have risen significantly, making it challenging to find affordable long-term housing.

In addition to housing, daily expenses such as groceries, dining out, and transportation have also been impacted by the inflation. As a digital nomad, managing a budget in a city with rising prices requires careful planning and prioritizing expenses. I have found that shopping at local markets and cooking at home helps to save money on food, while using public transportation instead of taxis helps to keep transportation costs down.

One of the most significant challenges I have faced as a digital nomad in Istanbul is the fluctuating exchange rates. The Turkish Lira has been depreciating rapidly against major currencies, making it difficult to predict how much money I will need for everyday expenses. This has led to a constant need to stay updated on exchange rates and adjust my budget accordingly.

Despite the economic challenges, living in Istanbul as a digital nomad has also brought about unique opportunities. The city’s growing startup scene and innovative co-working spaces provide a dynamic environment for remote workers, and the availability of high-speed internet makes it easy to stay connected with clients and colleagues around the world.

Moreover, Istanbul’s rich history and vibrant culture provide a constant source of inspiration and exploration. From visiting the iconic Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque to strolling through the trendy neighborhoods of Karakoy and Ortakoy, there is always something new to discover in this captivating city.

As a digital nomad living in Istanbul, I have learned to adapt to the high inflation and soaring costs of living. While it presents challenges, it has also taught me valuable lessons in budgeting, financial planning, and resilience. Despite the economic uncertainties, the vibrant energy and endless possibilities of living in Istanbul continue to make it an exciting and rewarding experience for digital nomads like myself.

Türkiye is not a Muslim country. It's a secular country. If it was a muslim one you wouldn't be able to buy alcohol.

Those grocery prices are quite reasonable compared to Canada. I did a Google cost comparison for fresh boneless chicken between Montreal and Turkey. It costs 51% LESS in Turkey than in Montreal! Grocery prices across Canada have risen by 300/ month for an average of $1357. The cost of living has risen by 8.5% in 2023 . It has become a major problem for lots of Canadian families . Our Federal government brought the directors of the the 3 major grocery chains to Ottawa to ask them to justify the huge profit they’ve made over the last 2 yrs. There is no concrete solutions to the 8.3% rise in inflation.
