My Experience: Securing a De Rantau Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa – Expenses & Tax Implications

As a digital nomad looking for a new destination to live and work remotely, Malaysia has always been on my radar. With its affordable cost of living, beautiful scenery, and diverse culture, it seemed like the perfect place to set up my temporary home base. When I heard about the De Rantau Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa, I knew that this was my opportunity to make Malaysia my next destination.

The De Rantau Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa is a new initiative launched by the Malaysian government to attract remote workers and freelancers to live and work in the country for up to a year. The visa allows holders to work for clients and companies outside of Malaysia, and it also provides them with access to affordable healthcare and other benefits.

Getting the De Rantau Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa was surprisingly simple and straightforward. I first checked the eligibility requirements on the official website and made sure that I met all the criteria. This included having a minimum monthly income of $2,500, proof of health insurance coverage, and a valid passport with at least six months of validity.

I then gathered all the necessary documents, including my passport, proof of income, health insurance policy, and a letter of intent explaining why I wanted to live and work in Malaysia. I submitted my application online, paid the processing fee, and waited for approval.

Within a few weeks, I received confirmation that my visa had been approved, and I was now officially a digital nomad in Malaysia. The visa cost me around $500, including the application fee and processing fee, which was a small price to pay for the opportunity to live in such a beautiful country.

In terms of taxes, as a digital nomad working for clients outside of Malaysia, I am not subject to Malaysian income tax on my foreign-sourced income. However, I still need to file a tax return in my home country and comply with any tax obligations there.

Overall, getting the De Rantau Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa was a smooth and hassle-free process. The cost and taxes were manageable, and the benefits of living and working in Malaysia far outweighed any drawbacks. I am now enjoying the vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and stunning scenery of Malaysia while still being able to earn a living remotely. If you are considering becoming a digital nomad in Malaysia, I highly recommend taking advantage of this new visa program.

Hiya! Great video! Could I please know exactly what details they checked with the employer? Would you mind please asking them? Was it just the salary or the job description as well?

    Thank you xx

The UK and Malaysia has a double tax treaty so that you don't have to pay tax twice on the same income, you should speak to your accountant about that so that you don't get taxed twice. I love KL and I'm there often and looking into getting the digital nomad visa myself but I think it's a bit more tricky for me as I'm self employed running an online business and they're asking for a contract of employment which I don't have.

Glad I watched this. Not gonna apply. Don't think I like the idea they're checking with employer. Normad means it's no one's business.
