Reasons to Avoid Pursuing a Career as an “Influencer”

In recent years, the rise of social media has given birth to a new kind of celebrity – the “influencer”. These are individuals who have amassed a large following on platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, and use their influence to promote products, lifestyles, and trends to their audience. While the idea of being an influencer may seem glamorous and lucrative, there are several reasons why you shouldn’t aspire to become one.

First and foremost, the influencer industry is highly saturated. With millions of people trying to become the next big thing on social media, the competition is fierce. It takes more than just posting pretty pictures and videos to stand out in a sea of influencers. Building a successful brand as an influencer requires time, effort, and a unique approach that sets you apart from the rest. This means that breaking into the industry and gaining a substantial following can be incredibly challenging and time-consuming.

Moreover, the influencer lifestyle is not as glamorous as it appears to be. While influencers often appear to live a lavish and carefree life, the reality is that they have to work hard to maintain and grow their following. This means creating and curating content, engaging with their audience, and constantly staying on top of social media trends. It’s a job that requires a significant amount of time and effort, and can often feel like a never-ending cycle of creating and promoting content.

Additionally, the influencer industry is notorious for its lack of authenticity. Many influencers are paid by brands to promote products to their audience, and this can often lead to dishonest and misleading content. Influencers may endorse products that they don’t genuinely believe in, solely for the sake of making money. This lack of authenticity can damage the trust and credibility of influencers, and ultimately, their relationships with their followers.

Furthermore, the influencer industry is unpredictable and fickle. Social media platforms and trends are constantly changing, and what may be popular one day could be irrelevant the next. This means that an influencer’s success is not guaranteed and can be fleeting. Without a solid backup plan, influencers can find themselves struggling to stay relevant and maintain their income.

Finally, the influencer lifestyle can take a toll on one’s mental and emotional well-being. Constantly being in the public eye and subject to judgment and criticism can be overwhelming and draining. Influencers often face pressure to maintain a certain image and persona, which can be exhausting and detrimental to their mental health.

In conclusion, while being an influencer may seem glamorous and exciting, the reality is that it is a highly competitive, unpredictable, and mentally taxing industry. Aspiring influencers should carefully consider the challenges and drawbacks of the influencer lifestyle before pursuing it as a career.

"Monster" Gave me the same feeling. I can relate to it so well. Being a looked up to figure in a community I was once apart of and feeling like I couldn't even be me anymore because you just don't wanna let the image that people have of you down.

Yes Gabrielle is right & I side firmly with her. Youtube is still a valuable place-to-be so to speak if just
because there are multiple algorithms out there that state Why you shouldn't become an influencer.
And until these become just One Algorithm -a doubtful thing given the fact that Gabrielle and others
show their abilities to resist such a thing- then there is no reason why Youtube and it's influencers
cannot continue influencing for the good.
(for as I say elsewhere I came here with that same tentative expectation and also with a few learned
simple & trusted hints so to speak. One of these is that if anyone is even thinking of becoming a
Youtube Influencer then there is No reason why you should consider contacting your favourite
one to try to get-a-more-personalised feel for doing What They do ; another hint in that respect
is that you (& even Youtube itself) may wish to try to "couple up with" other Influencers willing
to do likewise so to speak.
    Good luck.

I've made so many different YouTube channels because it's always been something that I enjoy, but every time something seems to get in the way. I love your content and appreciate you so much for always being real. It's really people like you who have inspired me to start my channel again and throw my hat in the ring to see if I can make something by doing something that I really love. Thank you <3

An influencer is just another word for a fake ass ig model. You aren’t an influencer for posting pics and getting paid 10k per post. You aren’t influencing shit

Working as a social media manager for bigger influencers, it’s about money :). When it comes to acting though, you have to have training. it’s about being talented and actually working hard to get there. All famous actors have training. Addison may be exception, but she also has acting training. Most agencies don’t want you to blow up on Tiktok/youtube because than you are only knows as your brand, and people won’t see you as a real actor because you will alwyas be playing yourself. If you come from money you will make it as a known influencer. That’s mainly the whole social media industry. But you don’t need social media to work with brands. I’m a former published model and studied acting at a performance school, worked with over 300 brands. I used to get paid to attend events at the playboy mansion, and Maxim magazine. I worked as a promo model for over 200 companies. No one knows the whole behind the scenes, but a lot of it is who you know and money. Lot of Tiktokers come from money nowadays and pay social media agencies and pay celebs to shout out their pages to get in front of big eyes. That’s how they grow nowadays. Back in the day it was about talent, because there was no emphasis on social media. I was published over 200 times in Maxim, Muscle and Fitness, book covers, with no social media only because of my connection with working with a celebrity photographer and his agency he worked with. I also had friends in the industry, who knew big time people and most of them was because their parents worked in the film industry. I grew up with my dad who knew a producer well who asked if I wanted to do movies as a kid( I was to shy so I said no) but another example of its who you know. You can also accomplish a lot without social media if you have the connections, or know someone in the industry. There also a dark side to where people sleep with industry people to make it to the top. Lots of people don’t talk about this, but if you work in the industry or did than you know what’s behind a lot of it.

To be honest, I don't respect Gabrielle the "influencer". I do respect Gabrielle, the person that has a dream to become a doctor and help people The person that is always working toward that. The person that said she wanted to help burn and accident victims, to make a real lasting impact in those people lives.

"Influencer" is a fancy way of saying online celebrity that posts content to entertain people so that they can push their status larger and then make money and sell products. It's a business, I understand that. I have no issues with it but she's right, like any business it has downsides not just upsides. People need to realize what it will cost them.

Gabrielle was lucky because she had a lot of help to get to this point (good and bad) and like she said it had and will continue to have a cost. As long as she and others are willing to pay that cost and it's worth it to them, then do your thing and try to enjoy it.

Personally, she could come out tomorrow and say it's all been an act for years and it wouldn't really bother me much, because I realize that it's a business and a certain about of acting is involved.

If she came out tomorrow and said she has given up on her dream or allowed herself to be derailed from it? That would bother me.

Couldn't agree more with everything she says in this video. In my "community" I've gotten very lucky. I started modeling out for friends whom I know have their own design company. From hippy clothing to the most adverse things like electroformed jewelry that has actual plants and dead animals inside. My page is doing way better than them. And I only do it for them. But on days that I've got over 100 messages from followers and companies people get mad if I don't answer the same day. Even though I work 80 hours a week on my own company.
