Seriously, How to Kickstart Your Art Career in 2023

2023 is the year to launch your art career. Seriously. With the world slowly reopening and the art world adapting to virtual platforms, there are more opportunities than ever for emerging artists to showcase their work and gain recognition. If you’ve been dreaming of starting a career in art, now is the time to make it a reality. Here are some tips to help you get started on launching your art career in 2023.

1. Build a strong portfolio: Your portfolio is your calling card as an artist. It showcases your best work and gives potential clients and galleries a sense of your style and capabilities. Take the time to curate a collection of your best pieces, including a variety of styles and mediums to showcase your versatility as an artist.

2. Create an online presence: In today’s digital age, having a strong online presence is essential for any artist. Create a website or online portfolio to showcase your work, and be active on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok to share your art with a wider audience. Engage with other artists and art enthusiasts online to network and gain exposure for your work.

3. Network with other artists and industry professionals: Networking is crucial for launching a successful art career. Attend art events, exhibitions, and gallery openings to meet other artists and industry professionals. Join art communities and organizations to connect with like-minded individuals and gain valuable insights and opportunities within the art world.

4. Apply for exhibitions and art fairs: Participating in exhibitions and art fairs is a great way to gain exposure for your work and connect with potential buyers and collectors. Research upcoming opportunities and submit your work for consideration. Don’t be afraid to start small – local art shows and community events can be a great way to gain experience and build your reputation as an artist.

5. Seek out mentorship and guidance: Finding a mentor or seeking guidance from more experienced artists can provide valuable insights and advice as you navigate the art world. Look for opportunities to connect with established artists and learn from their experiences. Many artists are willing to share their knowledge and offer mentorship to emerging talent.

6. Stay true to your vision: As you navigate the art world and seek opportunities to showcase your work, it’s important to stay true to your vision as an artist. Don’t be afraid to take risks and push the boundaries of your creativity. Your unique perspective and voice are what will set your work apart in a crowded and competitive industry.

Launching an art career in 2023 is an exciting and rewarding endeavor. With the right mix of talent, perseverance, and strategic planning, you can carve out a successful path as an artist. Embrace this opportunity to share your creativity with the world and pursue your passion for art. The art world is waiting for you – take the leap and make 2023 the year you launch your art career, seriously.

The only way to have a career graduating with an art degree is to have a degree from RISD. Everybody is working at Lowe's.

I have been painting since 1997, I have had my YouTube channel 181 for 6 years, I am not to 1000 subscribers yet , but I am almost to 1000 episodes. I do think you are helping me

"It takes time to make what we make, and we should give that the respect that it deserves."
As someone who launched back in 2017 and hit a hard burnout last year, I am here to refresh my brand and re-launch again.
Thank you for all of this, Kelsey. I admit I did consider myself a content creator for the majority of the time I was creating in those 5-6 years.
Pumping out content, running myself to the ground and not getting the financial stability I wanted from my art. It's difficult. And it doesn't really get easier. But we artists never really credit ourselves how much we grow. How much we grow stronger— with skills, strategy and business savvy. That takes time. That takes strength and launching—attempting— takes so much courage. I'm proud of you! I'm proud of us!

    Please keep going!

6 months to a 100 subscribers and a year and a half to a 1000 is really so important for creators to hear I think, just to know that even if growth is slow, it's still real growth and can eventually start becoming exponential growth

One of the things that sets my art apart is my intense hatred of advertising. You'll never see an ad on my YouTube videos. In fact, you'll never see me try to sell myself either. The money will magically appear in my hands or not at all.

That's probably why I didn't do so well as an artist

Going to save video for when I (hopefully) can produce artwork good enough to sell in (hopefully) a few months or so.

Competing with the AI art that is flooding all social platforms, bots that repost my work, people that resell my 3d models is making life as an artist more difficult than ever before. You will see your art on t shirts, print stores, merch stores etc etc and there is NOTHING you can do about it because 10 more will pop up after the one is FINALLY taken down. So bloody exhausting…

As a complete novice in the art marketing world, How do know what kind of art community I want to belong to and how, as a beginner, do I find out who the major players of said art community is? Please answer constructively because I never get answers on YT just trolls.

Being an artist blike: so u think u can art? Ok just pour all ur savings and vacation funds into equipment work full shifts improving ur skill while being a part time waiter and full time graphic designer and also dont forget to fill out these 20k pages of open calls cuz u already paid the application fee and the deadline is tomorrow not just for the open call but also ur rent which is the only thing u can afford so better find a philanthropist sugar daddy to take out for dinner cuz god knows the blue paint isnt as tasty as it once was.

vid and advices are nice, but here some notes:
-put your cam a bit further, youre too close
-try to gesticulate a bit less, its too distracting
-add b-roll. Vid of you talking is a bit repetitive, add some variety of visuals
