Taxes You Can Expect to Pay on the Spain Digital Nomad Visa

Spain has recently implemented a new visa specifically designed for digital nomads, allowing individuals to live and work in the country for an extended period of time. While this visa offers a great opportunity for those looking to explore Spain while working remotely, it’s important to understand what taxes you will be required to pay as a digital nomad on this visa.

As a digital nomad in Spain, you will be subject to certain taxes depending on your residency status and income. Here are the main taxes you can expect to pay while on the Spain Digital Nomad Visa:

Income Tax: As a resident of Spain, you will be required to pay income tax on all income earned in the country. This includes income from sources such as employment, self-employment, rental income, and investment income. The tax rate will vary depending on your income level, with rates ranging from 19% to 45%.

Value Added Tax (VAT): VAT is a consumption tax that is charged on most goods and services in Spain. The standard rate is 21%, although there are reduced rates of 10% and 4% for certain items. As a consumer in Spain, you will pay VAT on most purchases, including goods, services, and dining out.

Social Security Contributions: If you are self-employed in Spain, you will be required to pay social security contributions. These contributions fund healthcare, retirement benefits, and other social welfare programs. The amount you will need to pay will depend on your income level and specific circumstances.

Wealth Tax: Spain also levies a wealth tax on individuals with assets above a certain threshold. The tax rate ranges from 0.2% to 3.5% depending on the value of your assets. Wealth tax is calculated based on the total value of your assets, including real estate, savings, investments, and personal property.

It’s important to note that tax laws and rates in Spain can vary depending on your specific situation, so it’s advisable to consult with a tax professional or accountant to ensure you are compliant with all tax regulations.

Overall, while living and working in Spain on the digital nomad visa can be a great experience, it’s important to be aware of the taxes you will be required to pay. By understanding your tax obligations and planning accordingly, you can enjoy your time in Spain without any unexpected financial surprises.

Question – do you have to charge your USA clients VAT? That's just for European/Spanish clients right?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS – SUPER HELPFUL! Great to have everything in one place – a lot of the information is out there but you really have to search and it's not all in one place like this. Great confirmation of what took me months to figure out on my own.

Thank you very much for explaining all this! How does it work for those of us who use LLCs and work as contractors? I understand that Spain and the United States have an agreement to avoid double taxation

Thanks for this! I'm just paying my first quarterly bill now. I would love to know more about any expenses you deduct. Also if you and your partner file together at the end of the year, does it lower your tax burden? Can you opt out of the social security / healthcare system after year 1? Lastly, who do you use to file quarterly?

Awesome video. Thank you so much for the honesty and the research! It’s quite intimidating as a freelancer. Would you say it’s still worth it to move here even with the high tax rates? Like does the cost of living offset it?
