The Truth About Freelancing: #LLAShorts 640

Freelancing has become a popular career choice for many individuals in today’s digital age. With the rise of technology and the internet, it has become easier than ever to work and earn money from the comfort of your own home. However, despite its appeal, freelancing comes with its own set of challenges and realities that every freelancer should be aware of.

First and foremost, freelancing requires a great deal of discipline and self-motivation. Unlike a traditional 9 to 5 job, freelancers have to rely solely on their own drive to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines. There is no boss or manager breathing down your neck, which means you need to be your own boss and set your own work schedule. This level of freedom can be both liberating and challenging, as it requires self-discipline to stay focused and avoid distractions.

Another challenge freelancers often face is the uncertainty of income. While freelancing can offer great financial opportunities, it is important to remember that it is not a steady paycheck. Projects and clients may come and go, which means your income can fluctuate from month to month. It is essential to budget wisely and have a contingency plan in case of lean times.

Freelancers are also responsible for handling their own taxes and financials. Unlike traditional employees who have their taxes deducted automatically from their paychecks, freelancers must be diligent in tracking their income and expenses throughout the year. Additionally, they may need to pay estimated taxes to avoid any penalties or fines from the government.

Moreover, freelancers often face the challenge of finding and securing clients. Building a strong network and establishing a solid reputation is vital for success in the freelancing world. It requires investing time and effort into marketing oneself, whether through social media, online portfolios, or attending industry events. The competition is fierce, and freelancers need to continuously showcase their skills and expertise to stand out from the crowd.

Lastly, freelancers often find themselves working long hours, especially when trying to meet tight deadlines or juggle multiple projects simultaneously. Balancing personal life and work can be a challenge, as the line between the two can easily blur when working from home. Setting boundaries and learning to prioritize tasks is crucial to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Freelancing can provide incredible opportunities for individuals to showcase their talents, work on meaningful projects, and achieve financial independence. However, it is essential to go into freelancing with a realistic understanding of its challenges and realities. Discipline, financial responsibility, marketing, and time management skills are just a few of the qualities necessary to thrive as a freelancer.

In conclusion, freelancing can be a rewarding and flexible career choice, but it requires dedication, self-discipline, and perseverance. The freelancing journey may not be as glamorous as it appears, but with the right mindset and strategies, freelancers can navigate the challenges and reap the benefits of this exciting career path.

Yep! It's tough, I just do thumbnail designs for pocket money, works fine, but when I don't have work for a while, I wonder how tough it must be for someone who does freelance full time.I am able to do it without worrying about money, but for someone who has to earn, it must put them under serious mental pressure.

For anyone wondering, I just do foreign clients, I find less work but it's worth the while.

If you want to become a freelancer there are something’s you should get checked first.
    1. You should be a graduate.. I can’t emphasise this enough but getting a degree from a good college will expose you to better opportunities.. you’ll also get a window of 3-4 years to try your passion without any major investment or pressure from your parents..

    2. Being a freelancer in any creative field will take a hell lot of time to get expertise and build clients..

    3. It’s preferable if you have a good financial background because there will be a time when you won’t get any work for months and also delayed payments.. Keep in mind that 90% of your clients will delay your payment and some will never do.. So be ready for it.
Also the equipments. Initial investment in today’s market for being a cinematographer or editor you need a good PC and a decent camera. Clients don’t care how you do it the only thing matters to them is deliverables.. Delivering what your clients asks for when they ask for it is key for sustainability..

    4. Work on your skills first.
You can get a degree, start a job and do freelance work on side.. keep getting better at your work and efficiency and build some clients on side with your job.. if you feel comfortable and have 1-2 retainer clients then you can go for freelancing.. if you think that’s too much work then maybe it’s not suitable for you.. Just accept the fact..

I’m a freelance cinematographer and editor from last 6 years.. I completed my degree worked under a photographer for a year and when I decided to start on my own it took 2 years to build a good reputation and clientele.. If your clients think you’re replaceable then stick to a job and not freelancing.. Get real.. Good luck to all
