When it comes to choosing a beach destination in Mexico, Tulum and Puerto Escondido are two popular options that appeal to different types of travelers. Both offer stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and a laid-back atmosphere, but there are some key differences that could sway your decision on where to visit or set up camp as a digital nomad.
Tulum, located on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, is known for its pristine beaches, clear turquoise waters, and ancient Mayan ruins. The town has a bohemian chic vibe with trendy beachfront bars, boutique hotels, and yoga studios. Tulum is a popular destination for tourists looking to relax and unwind, as well as for digital nomads seeking a peaceful work environment with good internet connectivity.
On the other hand, Puerto Escondido, located on the Pacific coast in the state of Oaxaca, is a more rugged and laid-back beach town. It’s known for its powerful surf breaks, such as Zicatela Beach, which attracts surfers from around the world. Puerto Escondido also has a lively nightlife scene, with beachfront bars and restaurants serving up fresh seafood. While Puerto Escondido may not have the same level of luxury as Tulum, it offers a more authentic Mexican experience with a lower cost of living.
In terms of tourism, Tulum tends to attract a more upscale crowd looking for luxury accommodations and wellness retreats. The town can get crowded, especially during peak season, with tourists flocking to see the ancient Mayan ruins and swim in the cenotes. On the other hand, Puerto Escondido offers a more laid-back and off-the-beaten-path experience, making it a great destination for travelers looking to escape the crowds and immerse themselves in local culture.
For digital nomads, both Tulum and Puerto Escondido have their pros and cons. While Tulum offers a more developed infrastructure with coworking spaces and trendy cafes, it can also be more expensive to live and work there. Puerto Escondido, on the other hand, offers a more affordable cost of living and a more relaxed pace of life, but it may lack some of the amenities that digital nomads are used to in larger cities.
Ultimately, the choice between Tulum and Puerto Escondido comes down to personal preference and what you’re looking to get out of your beach vacation or digital nomad experience. Whether you’re seeking luxury and relaxation in Tulum or adventure and authenticity in Puerto Escondido, both destinations offer a unique and unforgettable experience that will leave you wanting more.

Escondido is a more REAL Mexican experience, because the Yucatan hasn't been part of Mexico for all that long. I like the mountains and coast along the Pacific, but the culture is so much better in the REAL Mexico.
jaja la escucharon hablar en inglés en tulum y le cobraron todo más caro
Tulum is over long ago
Thank u! as a backpacker im def. going to Puerto Escondido<3
What is the name if the $22 a night hotel in Puerto Escondida? We are going there this Sunday.
I was a few days in Los Cabos and it matches Tulum, client profiles and price wise. Went straight to Puerto Escondido where I now relax and surf. No matching comparison. I confirm the internet sucks though. PE is not a place for digital nomads.
LOL… try the west coast during rainy season. Please everybody go to Tulum! And please stop making videos like this… it's how places become like Tulum.
You make comparisons to the texture of sand at the 2 coastlines but no mention of the fishing prospects ? Strange
Great information and thank you!
