Understanding Sales Tax Collection for Amazon FBA in 5 Minutes for 2024

Amazon FBA, or Fulfillment by Amazon, has become an increasingly popular option for e-commerce sellers looking to streamline their operations and reach a larger customer base. One of the key aspects of selling on Amazon FBA that sellers need to be aware of is sales tax collection. In this article, we will explain the basics of sales tax collection on Amazon FBA in 2024 in just five minutes.

Firstly, it is important to understand that sales tax laws can differ from state to state, and even from city to city. This means that as an Amazon FBA seller, you may be required to collect sales tax on your sales to customers in certain states or jurisdictions. The specific rules and regulations governing sales tax collection can be complex and confusing, which is why it is important to stay informed and seek professional advice if needed.

In 2018, the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling in the case of South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc. This ruling gave states the authority to require online retailers to collect sales tax on sales made to customers within their borders, even if the retailer does not have a physical presence in that state. This decision has had a significant impact on e-commerce sellers, including those selling through Amazon FBA.

In response to the Wayfair decision, Amazon has taken steps to help sellers comply with sales tax laws. In particular, Amazon has introduced a service called Amazon Tax Collection Service (TCS), which automatically calculates, collects, and remits sales tax on behalf of sellers. This can simplify the sales tax collection process for sellers, but it is important to note that sellers are ultimately responsible for ensuring compliance with sales tax laws.

To enroll in Amazon TCS, sellers must provide the necessary information about their business, including their tax identification number and the states in which they are registered to collect sales tax. Amazon will then calculate the appropriate sales tax for each sale and collect it from the customer at the point of sale. Amazon will remit the collected sales tax to the relevant tax authorities on the sellers’ behalf.

It is important for sellers to keep in mind that sales tax collection requirements can change over time, so it is essential to stay informed about any updates or changes to sales tax laws. Sellers should also keep accurate records of their sales and sales tax collected to ensure compliance with tax authorities. Failure to comply with sales tax laws can result in penalties and fines, so it is crucial for sellers to take their sales tax obligations seriously.

In conclusion, sales tax collection on Amazon FBA in 2024 can be a complex and challenging issue for e-commerce sellers. By understanding the basics of sales tax collection and enrolling in Amazon TCS, sellers can simplify the process and ensure compliance with sales tax laws. Staying informed about sales tax requirements and seeking professional advice when needed can help sellers navigate the changing landscape of sales tax laws and avoid potential pitfalls.

This video was so reassuring, I am an international seller wanting to open US Amazon account and I was stressing thinking how I would manage the different sales taxes.

Question though: Sales tax only needs to be paid if over a certain threshold for all the other applicable states, if you are not over that threshold should you UNTICK those states by default in that amazon page you shares? Ie way ask for sales tax if you arent making the volume?
Really hope you can reply to this

I am a seller in Texas, to get the sales tax exemption certificate, would I still have to register with Texas to get that certificate and wouldn’t they still require me to file quarterly? Any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Does that mean you don't have to file individual tax forms for those states and that Amazon pays the sales tax to the government for you?

Thanks for this video. If you’re LLC is registered in a particular state for an example, do you need to complete a resale certificate for other states you want to purchase from? For example, if your LLC is registered in NY, and you wanted to purchase from vendors located in other states, do you complete a resale certificate for each of those states or use the one from your home state? Also does streamlined Sales Tax Exemption Certificate work? There are states that aren’t included.
