A Detailed Account of the Everyday Life as a Digital Nomad, Traveling in a Van 🚐🌟 (Post 2+ Years)

Realistic day as a DIGITAL NOMAD traveling in a VAN 🚐🌟 (after 2+ years)

Imagine waking up in a new city or picturesque countryside every day, with the freedom to work from anywhere in the world. This dream has become a reality for many digital nomads who have traded traditional office jobs for a life on the road. After spending over two years as a digital nomad traveling in a van, I can assure you that the lifestyle is not always as glamorous as it seems on social media. Let me take you through a realistic day in the life of a digital nomad traveling in a van.

Morning Routine:
The day starts with the sun peeking through the curtains of the van. Waking up in a different location every day brings a sense of adventure and excitement. After a cup of coffee brewed on a portable stove, it’s time to dive into the morning routine. Some might choose to go for a quick jog or do a few stretches to wake up their body and mind before settling into work mode.

Work Setup:
Finding a reliable internet connection can sometimes be a challenge, especially when living on the road. So the first task of the day is to scout for a suitable location with internet access. This could be a local cafe, a library, or even a co-working space if available. Once a suitable spot is found, it’s time to open up the laptop and dive into work.

Work can vary depending on the type of digital nomad you are. For example, if you work as a freelance writer like me, you might spend the morning writing articles, editing content, or pitching new ideas to clients. Others could be focusing on web development, graphic design, or even running an online shop. The key is to have a steady flow of remote work to financially sustain the digital nomad lifestyle.

Breaks and Exploration:
While it may seem like a digital nomad spends the entire day glued to their laptop, breaks are an essential part of maintaining productivity and sanity. During lunchtime, you can take a break from work and explore the surroundings. Traveling in a van offers the flexibility to indulge in local delicacies or go for a hike in the nearby mountains. It’s important to strike a balance between work and play to fully experience the benefits of this lifestyle.

Challenges on the Road:
As much as living as a digital nomad in a van is rewarding, it comes with its fair share of challenges. One of the major challenges is dealing with intermittent internet connections. This can lead to frustrating moments when deadlines are looming, and finding a stable connection becomes a priority. Additionally, adapting to different climates and living conditions can be quite demanding, especially during extreme weather conditions or when there are limited facilities available.

Evenings on the Road:
As the workday winds down, the evening presents an opportunity to relax and unwind. This can involve enjoying the sunset at a scenic location, joining other digital nomads for a social gathering, or simply cozying up inside the van with a good book. One of the perks of being a digital nomad is the ability to experience breathtaking sunsets and connect with like-minded individuals from around the world.

Sleeping Arrangements:
For digital nomads living in a van, sleeping arrangements can vary. Some might opt for a campsite equipped with basic facilities like washrooms and showers, while others might find solace in parking their van in serene and remote locations. It’s important to factor in the safety and comfort of each sleeping arrangement, ensuring a good night’s rest to recharge for the next day’s adventures.

While living as a digital nomad traveling in a van may not be all “Instagrammable” moments and sun-kissed beaches, it offers a unique and rewarding lifestyle filled with new experiences, personal growth, and a sense of freedom. It requires a certain level of adaptability, resilience, and the ability to thrive in uncertainty. So if you’re ready to embrace the challenges and reap the rewards, the world is your office, and the open road awaits!

@ToryDelury could you explain how you get your mail when you’re living all over the country, and also if you know how it works? How do they know where to send it or do you pick a place on the road ahead to have it sent and then drive there? I’ve always meant to ask my van dwelling friend and I never remember when we’re together. I only see her every few years.

I’ve seen some VL people that are getting gifts from their followers via the post office and I’m baffled. I can’t seem to ask Google in a way that it quells my curiosity.

Safe travels! I hope you had a Happy 4th!

That Chuck E. Cheese, along with the Dollar Tree that's right next door to it, has to be a former OfficeMax, as I can tell by the storefront with the red lines on it.

Parking lots make me nervous still too, even after…(wow 7 months) being in this van.
Good thing I am driving to Alaska for the summer to get a break from the high traffic and gnarly parking lots for little bit.

Yeah its deceptive when someone is pulling out and you trying to park. It can cause an illusion when you hit your breaks and think your car is still moving. This happens to me once in a while at the gas stations
